b. 10-12

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No marks in AI & GE

Long accents in AF

Marks in FE (→EE)

..

We reproduce the short  hairpins in b. 10 and 12, whose nature is clearly the one of long accents, after AF (in FE and EE they were moved under the R.H. part). The absence of these marks in GE is probably an oversight of Chopin: in analogous b. 102-104 it is precisely GE that is the only source containing those marks.

b. 29-32

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No slurs in AI

Continuous slur in AF

2 slurs in FE, literal reading

2 slurs in FE, contextual interpretation

Slur in EE

2 slurs in GE1, literal reading

2 slurs in GE1, contextual interpretation

2 slurs in GE2

..

The majority of the source versions are a result of inaccuracies and mistakes. Out of the written-down versions of the slurring, hence except for AI, it is only two slurs that seem to be authentic:

  • the continuous slur of AF, which we give in the main text as written by Chopin's hand and confirmed by the same slur of AF (→FEEE) in analogous b. 121-124;
  • contextual interpretation of two slurs of GE1 consisting in dragging the slur to the g crotchet in b. 32 after the ending of the slur of GE1 in b. 124.

The issue concerning the differences in slurring in the next bars – see b. 33-37.

b. 37

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

The cautionary naturals before b1 and a1 were added while proofreading FE (→EE). The former is also in GE, perhaps also added at the proofreading stage. They are absent in the preserved autographs.

b. 84

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

The cautionary natural before e1 was added in the first stage of proofreading of FE (→EE). It does not appear in the remaining sources.

b. 134-136

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

Upper part, notation in AF

Upper part, notation in FE

Upper part, notation in GE

Upper part, notation in EE

..

In b. 134 and 136, the Chopinesque manner of writing stems always on the right-hand side of the noteheads contributed to an incomprehensible reproduction of the two-part notation of AF by the engraver of FE and, consequently, the totally erroneous notation of EE. In the main text we give the simplest and probably the latest notation introduced by Chopin in [AG] (→GE).
Similarly in b. 138-140.
