b. 56

Triad in AI & AF (→FEEE)

Sixth in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

It is difficult to say whether the missing b note on the 3rd beat of the bar is an oversight or an intentional change introduced in [AG]; it cannot be excluded that it was performed while proofreading GE1 (cf. similar changes introduced at previous stages of development of the Mazurka's text). Due to the above reason, in the main text we suggest a variant solution – b in brackets.

b. 124-125

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

Continuous slur in Af

2 slurs in GE, literal reading

Contextual interpretation of GE, our alternative suggestion

..

In the main text we give the continuous slur of AF, reproduced in FE and EE with minor inaccuracies related to the transition to a new line, starting from b. 125 – in EE the slur in b. 124 was led to the g crotchet only, whereas in FE the continuation of the slur on a new line is placed under the stave. The separated slurs of GE may be authentic – it seems that Chopin was gradually completing the slurring of the L.H. part while writing [AG], and it is AF that presents the final result of this process (in GE2 the slur ending in b. 124 was reproduced inaccurately, as a result of which it seems that its ending falls on a). The slur that begins in b. 125, perhaps added at the stage of proofreading of GE1, was placed under the stave – probably to avoid layout complications in b. 128. Therefore, as an alternative solution we suggest a slur of the same range, yet led over the tenor voice, to which it refers.

b. 141-143

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No slur in AI

Slur from b in AF

Slur from c1 in FE (→EE) & GE

..

It is unclear whether Chopin wanted the slur to begin from the c1 quaver or the b crotchet. The fact that the slur in FE (→EE) starts earlier than in AF is most probably an inaccuracy, which suggests that the slur of GE, of the same range, can also be inaccurate. However, the shape of the slur of GE1 shows that its initial fragment was being corrected in print, perhaps at Chopin's request, hence this is the version we give in the main text.
AI is devoid of slurs in these and next bars (until b. 152), which together fill the last line of the 2nd page of AI. Therefore, it is Chopin's inadvertence – on the next page the R.H. slurring is continued in this autograph.
