Slurs

b. 68-69

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slur from G in A1

Slur from G in FE (→EE)

Slur from A in GE

..

In accordance with what was written in b. 12-13, we give precedence to the beginning of the slur of A1, written by Chopin's hand, and not to the potentially inaccurate slur of GE. In FE (→EE) the slur runs already from the G minim, which is an overinterpretation of the notation of A1 or a common mistake.

b. 72

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slurs to bar 73 in A1 (literal reading→FEEE)

Slur to g1 & G in A1 (contextual interpretation) & GE

..

The contact between the abridged notation of b. 58-72 and the full notation of b. 73 and subsequent contributes to the ambiguity of A1, since Chopin did not coordinate the endings of the slurs in b. 16 with the notation of b. 73. The slurs in b. 16 (corresponding to b. 72) clearly lead to the next bar; however, in b. 73 there is no proof that Chopin would have really liked to continue them or even to end them: in the R.H. part a new slur starts, while the L.H. part is devoid of slurring in the entire section from b. 73 to b. 88. According to us, it means that Chopin wanted the slurs to end in b. 72, like in GE, based on [A2], whereas the version of FE (→EE) is incorrect.

b. 73

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

No slur endings in A1 & GE

Slur endings in FE (→EE)

..

We consider the endings of the curved lines in the parts of both hands to be an inaccurate interpretation of the ambiguous notation of A1 by FE (→EE).

b. 74-75

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

2 slurs in A1 (→FEEE)

Continuous slur in GE

..

Both versions of the slurring are most probably authentic and could be, according to us, considered equal. In the main text we give the slurring of A1 due to the possibility of GE having inaccurately reproduced the slurs of [A2] as well as to the visible corrections of the slurs in A1, which prove that the slurring concept was well thought out.

b. 76-77

composition: Op. 50 No. 1, Mazurka in G major

Slur to d1 in A1 (→FEEE)

Slur to bar 77 in GE

..

In the main text we give the slur of A1 (→FEEE), just like in the entire final fragment of the Mazurka (b. 73-103). In FE (→EE) there is also an additional slur under the notes – see the note below.
