Issues : Authentic corrections of FE
b. 637-639
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
In both manuscripts, these bars are a literal repetition of b. 186-188 (they are not written out in full), and like there, staccato dots in b. 637 and 639 are reproduced only in GE1 and GE3. We do not include them into the main text in view of their possible deletion during the proofreading of FE (→EE). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 645
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
As in b. 637 and 639, we consider the staccato dot over b2 a remnant of the original version, presumably removed during the proofreading of FE (→EE). However, the absence of mark in GE is most probably an oversight by the engraver. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE , Authentic corrections of FE |

The tie of c2, probably overlooked in A (→FC→GE1) in b. 211-212 (the discussed bars are a repetition thereof), was added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→EE) as well as – probably by analogy with b. 79-80 – in GE2 (→GE3). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 686

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

The version of FE is almost certainly erroneous, in spite of the fact that it was proofread; originally, in FE this bar was identical to the next one, yet it was only the 3rd note that was corrected, perhaps due to misunderstanding Chopin's proof entry or due to an incomplete implementation of the proofreading. EE repeated the version of FE from before proofreading, which, unless it is an extraordinary coincidence, means that it was a change introduced in the last phase of proofreading. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Partial corrections |

b. 692-707
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

In the main text we give the indication cresc. - - - written by Chopin in FC (see the note to b. 65-66) The composer added crescendo in this fragment also in the proofreading of FE (→EE); however, he began it a bar later. That version, most probably later, can be considered equivalent. GE1 reproduced the indication of FC inaccurately, since from b. 697 it overlooked the dashes marking the range of cresc. That oversight was corrected in GE2 (→GE3). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Inaccuracies in GE , GE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of FC |
