Issues : Inaccuracies in GE
b. 358
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
An erroneous interpretation of the Chopinesque as would frequently happen to the engravers of the first editions, see, e.g. the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 35, I mov., b. 5. The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , GE revisions , fz – f |

b. 369-370
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
In A the slur at the end of b. 369 clearly suggests continuation, which is not confirmed by the slur in b. 370, at the beginning of a new page. The notation of FC can also be regarded as misleading in that respect. A comparison with three analogous places, b. 268-269, 288-289 & 390-391, evidently supports inaccuracy of the slur in b. 369, pulled too far. Therefore, in the main text we give separated slurs, yet the version of the editions with a continuous slur may be considered an acceptable variant in this case. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Uncertain slur continuation |

b. 383

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
In A it is unclear whether the phrase mark is to begin from the 1st or the 2nd note of the bar, which was reflected in the differing versions of FC and FE (→EE). At the same time, in FE there are visible traces of shortening the phrase mark, which initially reached b1 in the previous bar. The version of GE is probably a 'standard inaccuracy' resulting from a tendency to adjust phrase marks (and dynamic hairpins) to regular rhythmic structures, e.g. bars, which is documented in a number of Chopin's pieces. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in FE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Authentic corrections of FE |

b. 434
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
The mark in A, like in analogous b. 332, is most probably a reversed long accent, and this is the version we give in the main text. All the remaining sources reproduced it inaccurately, moving it to the right and sometimes also extending it. We suggest a common long accent as an alternative version, as written by Chopin in FC in analogous b. 332. It is likely that the change was also to apply to the discussed bar: overlooking proofreading one of the analogous places is one of Chopin's typical inaccuracies. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Long accents , Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in FE , Omitted correction of an analogous place , Inaccuracies in FC |

b. 438-439
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

The slur in FC resembles the slur of A, yet it is slightly longer, which misled the engraver of GE1. The subsequent GE omitted that slur, which, from the point of view of the reviser of GE2, was a reasonable decision: among 16 bars featuring b-e1 on the 2nd crotchet and g on the third one, it is only here that FC and GE1 feature a slur, which could seem a mistake. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , GE revisions , Inaccuracies in FC |
