Just like in all similar situations, in the main text we give the notation of A (→FC), which is present also in GE2. The changes were introduced in the remaining editions: replacing both bars with one double bar in FE (→EE) and providing rests with digits cannot come from Chopin.

b. 136-168

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

Just like in b. 4-36, in the main text we keep the notation of the bars filled with rests used by Chopin in A (→FC). The majority of the editions complemented the notation with digits denoting the number of bars (1 or 2 in b. 155-156) or numbering the bars (1 or 1 2).

No marks in A (→FCGE)

Wedge in bar 165 in FE (→EE1EE2)

Dot & wedge in EE3

4 wedges suggested by the editors

4 dots, our alternative suggestion

..

In b. 141, 149, 165 and 173 separate staccato markings for the L.H. chords are featured only in b. 141 (dot) in EE3 and in b. 165 (wedge) in FE (→EE). Only the latter could have come from Chopin; however, such a separate addition seems to be highly unlikely. According to us, it rather points to a mistake of the engraver. In spite of lacking source basis, in order to avoid doubts, in the main text we suggest adding the markings featured in the R.H. to the notation of the L.H.

b. 209

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

A is missing the  raising g2 to g2. The patent inaccuracy was corrected both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE). It is difficult to say conclusively who entered the  into FC, Chopin or Fontana. In turn, a diagonal cross, in pencil, visible in this place in A means that the missing mark was already noticed by the engraver of FE, as long as the mark comes from the time the Scherzo was published.

Slur to f in A

No slur in FC

Slur to d1 in FE (→EE) & GE

..

When interpreted literally, the slur of A encompasses only the quavers. A comparison with the analogous figures proves Chopin's inaccuracy, corrected already in FE (→EE). The missing slur in FC must be an oversight of the copyist, corrected already in GE1 (→GE2GE3).
