Issues : Long accents

b. 34-36

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

2 long accents in FE (→GE1GE2)

2 short accents in EE

 in bar 34 in GE3

..

EE reproduced the distinct long accents of FE (→GE1GE2) as short. In GE3, the mark in bar 34 was changed to a , whereas the one in bar 36 was omitted. Those are arbitrary changes and a mistake.

..

According to us, the dynamic markings in bars 68 and 70, although of clearly different lengths in the sources, are to be interpreted in the same way due to the affinity of those bars. It is the long accent that was sometimes reproduced in a similar manner; we give such accents in the main text.

b. 130-143

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

Long accents in FE (→GE1GE2)

Short accents in EE & GE3

..

In FE, the majority of the accents in bars 130-131 and analog. are long accents – 7 out of 11 (compared to 2 short and 2 ambiguous); the ratio in GE1 (→GE2) is similar. Taking into consideration the fact that the Chopinesque mark of a long accent was not considered by the engravers to be a long accent but rather a short one or a  hairpin, we regard such a representation as a proof that Chopin meant long accents in this place.

b. 142

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

No mark in FE (→GE1GE2, →EE1EE2)

Short accent in GE3 & EE3

Accents are present in 11 similar figures of this and previous, analogous phrases, so that the missing mark in the indicated place must be considered an inaccuracy. In the main text, we add a long accent in accordance with the accents used in FE. The short accent added in GE3 and EE3 corresponds to the accents adopted in those editions.

b. 245-247

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

Short accents in #FE (→GE,EE)

Long accents suggested by the editors

..

The accents in the L.H. in bars 245 and 247 have different length in FE, but they do not seem to be long, so both GE and EE reproduced them as short. According to us, it is still possible that Chopin wrote long accents in [A], which is indicated by the slightly longer mark in FE in bar 247 and evident long accents in the orchestral part of FEorch (clarinet I and bassoon I).
