b. 487
The first 11 bars of the recapitulation include significantly fewer performance indications than their counterparts in the exposition. It presents us with a dilemma – whether and to what extent to add those indications by comparing analogous bars. The solution adopted in the main text, subjective by force, is based on the following conditions:
- No slurs at all – they unexpectedly appear in bar 497 and they are almost complete from then on – suggests that the reason for their omission was random and extra-musical. Due to that reason, we add slurs on the basis of Atut (bars 492-493, 494-495 and 496).
- With respect to accents, a similar conclusion is not that natural (see marks in bars 489-490), hence in this case we add only one accent (in bar 493), emphasising the beginning of the second sentence.
