Longer slur suggested by the editors

A comparison of the figurations in bars 295-296 and 311-312, which are similar in terms of shape, reveals a number of inconsistencies and gaps in the slurring. The assumption that Chopin intended the analogous figures to be provided with analogous slurs, which is, according to us, highly likely, leads to the following conclusions:

  • The slur at the transition between bars 311 and 312 was most probably supposed to be also in bars 295-296. There is a similar situation, in which the slur at the end of bar 296 was most probably overlooked in bar 312.
  • The first slur in bar 296, present in an identical form also in bar 312, may serve as a model of slurring for bars 295 and 311.

The fact of GE beginning the slur in bar 295 later is a revision or inaccuracy – a possible Chopinesque correction would have also included extension of the slur. Nevertheless, the issue of which notation – FE or GE – corresponds to the notation of [A] remains open, since in similar contexts, it is sometimes very difficult to interpret slurs in Chopin's autographs – cf. e.g. the return of the first theme of the Etude in A major, op. 10 no. 10, bars 55-56. Therefore, the slur of GE3, although formally non-authentic, may also correspond to Chopin's intention.
