Issues : Long accents

b. 5

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A long accent in A (→GE2) and FE

A short accent in GE1 and EE

..

The accent over a1 is doubtless a long one in A; this is testified by the change made in GE2 (probably after a repeated analysis of A). The sign in FE is not quite clear, yet it resembles a long accent more than a short one. In spite of that, EE has a short accent over the note in question.

A long accent in A

A short accent in GE (→FEEE)

..

Distortion of  Chopin's notation resulted from the fact that the musical notation of the day did not have a separate "long accent" category and therefore a relevant standardized sign did not exist.

The fact that the sign was placed under the staff is nonetheless strange, as this was not typical for the editorial practices of those times.

Possibly a long accent in A

Short hairpins in  GE (→FEEE)

..

The dynamic mark in A resembles a long accent. Yet, taking into account the marking of an analogous phrase two bars earlier, it can be considered diminuendo hairpins, and was interpreted as such in GE (→FEEE). Anyway, the difference between the two interpretations is more academic than practical, both from the graphic and the performance-related point of view.

A probably has a long accent here.

A short accent in GE (→FEEE)

..

The shape of the accent in A makes it resemble a short accent  (a relatively wide angle between the arms), but it has the size of a long accent. The syncopated longer rhythmic value of the accented note makes us believe it was meant to be a long accent, yet the editions have a short accent here.

A more probable reading of A

GE (→FEEE)

..

The sign visible in A is, in our opinion, a long accent, just like in bar 42. In GE (→FEEE) it was reproduced as hairpins .
