Issues : Authentic corrections of GE

b. 143

composition: Op. 19, Bolero

g2 in FE (→EE)

f2 in GE

..

In the main text we give gpresent in the base source, i.e. FE (→EE). The authenticity of this version is supported both by source arguments – Chopin did not question this note both in the proofreading of FE and in any of the pupil's copies – and stylistic ones – cf. similar passages in other compositions by Chopin, e.g. in the Sonata in B minor, op. 58, 1st mov., bar 19. The fnote was probably introduced in the proofreading of GE, replacing gof the version of FE; however, one does not know whether it was performed by Chopin.

b. 174-176

composition: Op. 19, Bolero

No slurs in FE (→EE1)

Slurs in EE2 (→EE3)

Our variant suggestion

..

The slurs encompassing two quavers in the L.H. at the transition between bars 174 and 175 and 175 and 176 are present only in GE, in which they could have been added by Chopin. EE2 (→EE3) also have slurs in these places, perhaps under the influence of GE; however, the slurs combine the bottom notes of the dyads and they were arbitrarily added for all double quavers in the L.H. in bars 174-177.

b. 178-179

composition: Op. 19, Bolero

Slur in FE (→EE)

..

In FE (→EE), the slur ends with the last note in bar 178. In the proofreading of GE it was extended – most probably by Chopin – to the 2nd semiquaver in the next bar.

It is difficult to unequivocally prove where the difference between the pitch of the 3rd quaver in the accompaniment in FE (→EE) and GE came from. Both sources do not reveal any explicit traces of corrections. We assume that it is most likely that Chopin corrected the original (perhaps even erroneous) version of FE in GE. However, the evidence is inconclusive, hence we add a variant of the base source, FE, to the main text.
