composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Separate slurs in A

Continuous slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The division of the slur in A is probably the original version, left due to deletions and inability to write a continuous slur in a graceful way. However, such slur is in the L.H. and in GE (→FEEE), where Chopin's possible intention was interpreted correctly.

Small-print f1 in A (→GE)

Normal-print octave in FE (→EE)

Small-print octave suggested by the editors

..

Replacing the single fnote with an f-foctave in FE (→EE) is certainly a change introduced by Chopin – cf. 1st mov., bar 348. However, the same cannot be said of printing this octave with notes of a normal size, in both bars. There had to be a misunderstanding at the time of implementing the proofreading, since adding this octave to the solo part is unimaginable, as far as the logic of the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra is concerned.

E in A (→GE)

G in FE (→EE)

In the main text we give G introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→EE). FE1 overlooked a  before this note, which was then added in FE2.

 in A (literal reading→GE1FE) & GE2

No sign in GE1a

in A (contextual interpretation) & EE

..

When interpreted literally, the  sign in A (→GE1FE) suggests pressing pedal on the 5th, 6th or even 7th quaver in the bar. According to us, it is an inaccurate notation – Chopin had already little space under the note and writing the sign before would be even more misleading. According to us, it is EE that interpreted the composer's intention correctly.

In all copies of GE1a, the discussed sign was overlooked as a result of an inaccurately performed graphic proofreading of bars 235-236.

Change of the type of accent to short is one of many inaccuracies of this kind in EE and GE2.
