leggieramente in A & GE2

leggiermente in GE1

leggieremente in FE

leggiero in EE

..

The form of this adverb used by Chopin had already been archaic in his time. Therefore, in the main text we accept the correction introduced in GE1. The form used in FE is erroneous, whereas in EE the adverb was replaced with an adjective. Curiously, GE2 reinstated the incorrect A form.
Similarly in bar 317.
NB. The contemporary Italian orthography approves of leggeroleggeremente only, without 'i'. However, the older orthography is traditionally used in music markings and is not deemed erroneous.

Semiquaver in A

Slashed grace note in GE1

Quaver in FE (→EE)

Grace note in GE2

Rest & semiquaver suggested by the editors

..

The semiquaver opening the bassoon motif was given the form of a slashed grace note in GE, which could have been influenced by the notation of A, in which the grace note is unusually small. On the other hand, in A it is written as a semiquaver, in accordance with the rhythm in Morch in the part of bassoon, which is playing this motif. Therefore, it is unlikely that a grace note would be compliant with Chopin's intention. The reason for the change could have been formal rhythmic correctness, since due to the lack of rests before this note, only a grace note fits smoothly between three crotchets of this bar. In turn, it is difficult to say what the motivation of the person (Chopin?) who changed the grace note to a quaver in FE (→#EE) was. In the main text we choose the undoubtedly authentic notation of A, adding the rest overlooked by Chopin for the record.

b. 227

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

Chopin wrote four cautionary flats in A – three at the beginning of the bar and a fourth one before d3. The signs were repeated in GE, whereas in FE (→EE1) the flats before the octave in the L.H. were overlooked. These were in turn restored – most probably on the basis of comparison with GE1 – in EE2 (→EE3). In the main text we add five cautionary signs more, before b2b1c3e3 and d2.

b. 236-237

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Continuous slur in A (→GE1, contextual interpretation)

Separate slurs in FE (→EE) & GE2

..

In GE1, the slur in bar 236, at the end of the line, indicates continuation, which, however, is not confirmed by the slur in bar 237. This ambiguous notation was interpreted contrary to the notation of A both in FE (→EE) and GE2. It is worth observing that the compliance of the slur of GE1 in bar 236 with A is a result of intense proofreading – originally, the entire line (bars 232-236) was provided with one-bar slurs. At the same time, the traces of the changes in bars 235-236 became so visible over time that GE1a was reengraved in this place. The oversight of the dashes marking the range of validity of the octave sign at the end of bar 236 was a side effect of this retouch.

b. 294

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

The sources include a cautionary  before dat the beginning of the bar. In FE (→EE) and GE2 a respective sign was added also next to d in the L.H. We do not include these signs in the main text, since it is d that has been exclusively present for more than 20 bars and not d. Cf. bar 298.
