Issues : Authentic corrections of GE

The slurs and dots adopted by us were introduced – most probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of GE (→FE→EE). (FE overlooked the slur in bar 182.) There are no dots in A, and the slurs are marked inaccurately, so that it is uncertain whether they are supposed to encompass the whole bars or only the 2nd and 3rd crotchets. Similarly in bars 353-360. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources |

In the main text we give the legible and complete notation of A and GE2. The additional slur over the quaver triplet, present in GE1 (→FE→EE), is almost certainly inauthentic – it is possible that both here and in bar 180 only the triplet slurs were initially printed, which Chopin corrected in the discussed bar, by adding a slur compliant with the notation of A. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions , Authentic corrections of GE |

In A there is no lowering c1 to c1. This patent oversight was corrected already in GE1 (→FE→EE, →GE2), perhaps by Chopin. Moreover, a cautionary before c1 was added in the next bar. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Omission of current key accidentals , Errors of A , Authentic corrections of GE |

In A bar 199 is the last one on the page, which contributed to the fact that the range of the slur in the L.H. is vague – the slur started in this bar suggests continuation, yet there is no ending thereof on the next page. The inaccuracy was corrected in GE1 (→FE→EE), perhaps at Chopin's request; however, it is questionable that he would be thinking about a slur that would not embrace the last note of this scale passage (cf. the slurs in the R.H. in this place). Due to this fact, it is the slur led to the beginning of bar 201, in accordance with GE2, that we adopt to the main text. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccurate slurs in A , GE revisions , Authentic corrections of GE , Corrected slurs of Op. 21 in GE1 |
