Issues : No pedal release mark

b. 260

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No sign in A

No sign in A

 in GE (→FEEE)

..

The absence of  in A must be an oversight – it is the last bar on the page in A, which is conducive to various types of inaccuracies of notation. The sign was added already in GE1 (→FEEE, →GE2), perhaps at Chopin's request.

b. 329

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No sign in A (→GE)

 in FE (→EE)

..

The  sign may be a mistake of the engraver of FE (→EE). However, Chopin's proofreading cannot be entirely excluded: it may be that the composer wanted to prevent the next fragment from being performed without pedal or, which is more likely, he was thinking about a short pedal encompassing the octave leap of the top voice in the R.H.

Our variant suggestion

..

The pedalling of A (→GEFE) is questionable in this bar. Initially, both this and the next bar had a whole-bar pedalling. Chopin then crossed out both signs in bar 436 and a  in the discussed bar 435. It is difficult to guess what a sole  mark left in this bar could mean in this context, hence it seems that Chopin committed a mistake: he either forgot to cross out the  mark or he unnecessarily crossed out the  mark. According to us, the latter option seems to be more plausible; therefore, in the main text we give a completed pedalling, written in brackets to signalise that its status is not entirely certain. EE added a  in accordance with the harmonic sense.

The missing  mark in A (→GE) is most probably an inaccuracy, resulting from the transition into a new page. Prior to this place, Chopin wrote a respective sign in an analogous situation three times (bars 414, 422 and 454). The omission of the  mark in FE (→EE) is most probably an oversight.

b. 494-502

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

 in A & GE2

No pedalling in GE1 (→FEEE)

& [] suggested by the editors

..

No pedalling markings in GE1 (→FEEE) must be an oversight – in A the  mark is written carelessly and just above the clef opening the line of the cello part in Morch, so it could have been unrecognised. According to us, Chopin wanted to hold pedal at least until the end of bar 501 – cf. an analogous situation in bars 353-356. In the main text we suggest it with a mark in bar 502.
