The slurring of the R.H. in bars 409-424 and 449-464 is quite clear in A, in spite of a few minor inaccuracies resulting from, e.g. crossed out fragments or transitions into a new page; each time it encompasses the figures separated in a natural way by hand transfer and staccato marks. In spite of this, in GE1 the slurs – like in many other places – frequently deviate from the notation of A. In accordance with what was said in the characterization of this edition, the most frequent distortions include:
- aligning slurs to metric structures, mostly bars – bars 410-411, 417-419, 451, 457-459;
- dividing longer slurs into shorter sections – bars 415-416, 419-420, 451-452.
Significantly, even there where the slurs in GE1 are correct, it is usually a result of proofreading, e.g. in bars 422, 453-455, 462-463.
FE generally repeated the notation of GE1, not avoiding certain mistakes, e.g. omissions of slurs in bar 415 (in this case it is the slur of GE1 that could have been added later) or in bar 424. The slur in bar 424 was added in EE and it is the only difference with respect to FE.
GE2 generally restored the notation of A; in addition, a few of its inaccuracies were corrected, in accordance with the musical sense, e.g. the vague endings of the slurs in bars 409-410, 412-413, 420-421, 449-450, 456-457 and 458-459 were specified. The major arbitrary change is the introduction of a division of the slur before the 2nd beat in bars 412, 420 and analog.
