The  sign is placed in A (→GE1→FE) over the R.H., since the pedal here is supposed to, above all, preserve the sound of the g2 minim. Chopin used a similar notation in the Prelude in F major, Op. 28 No. 13, bars 33-35. The revisers of EE and GE2 considered this suggestive notation to be unworthy of keeping. In the main text we add the overlooked by Chopin  sign.

Both ways of pedalling, which can be deduced from the inaccurate and obscure notation of the sources – above all A – may be considered equal, according to us; their sound effect is very similar anyway. In the main text we give a possible interpretation of corrections and entries visible in A. The second proposed version, also referring to the notation of A (interpreted differently), reproduces at the same time the notation of the editions, free from errors. In particular, we correct the erroneous oversight of markings in the middle of bar 121, in which Chopin overlooked the  sign and in GE1 (→FE→EE) there was  instead of  (cf. bar 283).

The absence of the  sign in this place is undoubtedly Chopin's oversight, which may have been caused by the transition to a new page (the sign would fall at the end of page of A).

The missing  asterisk in A is undoubtedly a mistake – this kind of oversights would happen to Chopin on a number of occasions, and the end of a page always fosters inaccuracies. The total oversight of the second pedal in this bar in GE1 (→FE→EE) is also to be considered a mistake – there is no reason to use a different pedalling in the ending of this bar than in three previous analogous bars 234, 236 and 238. GE2 added both a  and a . In this context, the placement of the  sign adopted there is the only reasonable one, hence we give this version in the main text.

The missing  in A is most probably Chopin's neglect. However, it is not entirely certain whether it was he that added the sign in the proofreading of GE (→FE→EE).
