Issues : Errors in EE

b. 169-170

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

2 staccato dots in A (→GE)

Dot in bar 170 in FE

No marks in EE

..

FE overlooked the staccato dot at the beginning of bar 169. EE also omitted the one in bar 170 – another oversight or a uniformising revision.

FE (→EE1) has b as the 3rd semiquaver. Corrections of this mistake made in pencil are in FED and FEJ, the correct text was introduced also in EE2 (→EE3).

Instead of the trill –  – present in A (→GE), FE (→EE1) has an octave sign (8- - -). The striking error was corrected by Chopin in FED. The correct version was restored also in EE2 (→EE3), probably on the basis of comparison with GE1

b. 211

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In the editions (except GE2), the solo piano phrase in bars 209-210 is written with an octave sign. In GE1 (→FEEE1) the dashes marking its range are erroneously led until the fminim in bar 211; there is also no loco indication following them. As a result, when interpreted literally, the minim is an f3, although in this context it is easy to see a mistake. In spite of this, in GE2, in which the entire phrase was written without an octave sign (as in our main text), the minim in bar 211 was also moved an octave higher, at the same time confirming its erroneous pitch. In EE2 (→EE3) the range of the octave sign was marked correctly.

e2 in A (→GEFE)

The addition introduced in EE, most probably due to e in the L.H., is, however, certainly erroneous: raising the bottom note in a roulade, independently from the chord being its harmonic background, is rather a rule than an exception.
