b. 226

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Long accent on 1st semiquaver in A

Short accent on 2nd semiquaver in GE1 (→FE)

Short accent on 1st semiquaver in EE & GE2

..

Placing the accent over the second of the last group of semiquavers in GE1 (→FE) may be considered a common mistake, if it were not for the fact that putting an accent exactly on femphasises the second motif (in this case g1-f1), repeated then – and accented – in all further appearances of a similar figuration (bars 230, 234, 236, 238 and 240). It would implicate Chopin's proofreading and perhaps even a mistake of the composer in A. However, a mistake of the engraver is supported by lack of traces of removal of the accent and a high likelihood that Chopin cared more for the rhythmic rather than for the melodic motif.

a in A, literal reading

f in A (contextual interpretation) & GE (→FEEE)

..

The a note written in A (the 11th semiquaver) is most probably Chopin's mistake (the so-called Terzverschreibung error). The note was corrected to already in GE1 (→FEEE, →GE2) and it is highly likely that it was performed by Chopin himself.

b. 237

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The cautionary natural before G, the 1st semiquaver in the L.H., was added in the proofreading of GE1 (→FEEE, →GE2). According to us, this random addition could have been performed at Chopin's request.

b. 255

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The traces of corrections, visible in GE1, prove that the slurs were initially divided on the bar line, which means that bars 254-256 were embraced – contrary to the clear notation of A – with three whole-bar slurs.

b. 257-260

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur in bars 257-258 in A

4 slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

The absence of three out of four slurs under the motifs in the L.H. in A must be considered Chopin's neglect (the slurs are still present in bars 261-262). Therefore, in the main text we include the slurs added in GE (→FEEE), although it is not absolutely certain whether it was Chopin's proofreading. See also bars 259-260.
