b. 23-25

2 slurs in A, probable interpretation

3 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

2 slurs in A (possible interpretation) & GE2

Our alternative suggestion

The range of the slurs in the L.H. in A is unclear:

  • if we consider that both endings of the slur indicate the first and last note under the slur, each of the slurs embraces three notes;
  • one can also consider the slurs to be shifted to the right, since none of them exceeds the bar line (cf. bars 27-28).

The latter was adopted in GE2. The slurring of the remaining editions is probably a combination of the inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 and perhaps the authentic proofreading of this edition: traces of corrections prove that initially the slur in bar 24 embraced the entire bar (as in bar 23) and, in addition to that, a slur in bar 25 was added. Assuming that Chopin corrected the most flagrant elements of the original notation of GE1, one can suggest developing the idea of the proofreading, which we propose as an alternative version.
