b. 328-329

The slur over the final section of the passage in the L.H. written on the bottom stave is most probably an addition of the revision of GE1 (→FEEE). However, Chopin's proofreading cannot be entirely excluded, e.g. in such a situation:

  • the engraver of GE1 omits the final one-and-a-half-bar section of the Chopin slur running from bar 327 most probably due to graphical difficulties with fitting the slur into the area included in the octave sign;
  • upon seeing a section of the passage without a slur, Chopin adds a slur over it and a slur in the L.H. (this hypothetical Chopin proofreading was independently performed by the reviser of EE);
  • the engraver, still not knowing how to deal with the slur in the R.H., engraves only the slur in the L.H., which passes to FE;
  • after another intervention – of Chopin or of the reviser – a shorter, thus easier slur in bar 329 was added in the last phase of proofreading.

According to us, even if Chopin actually intervened in the slurring in any way in this place, the changes were meant as ad hoc corrections of mistakes and not as a change of the concept. Due to this reason, in the main text we leave the notation of A.
