b. 169-170

Slurs in A (contextual interpretation→GE)

Slurs in FE

Slurs in EE

In certain details, the slurs in the L.H. are written in A inaccurately:

  • the 1st slur in bar 169 ends over the 10th semiquaver in the bar;
  • the ending of the 2nd slur is clearly drawn too far, which suggests its continuation in the next bar. It is particularly important for the second time;
  • the beginning of the 1st slur in bar 170 may be seen over the 1st or 2nd semiquaver.

In this situation, the precision of the slurs of GE is astonishing. A closer analysis proves that they were proofread, in this case almost certainly by Chopin. It is indicated by:

  • minor traces of proofreading, e.g. extensions of the ending of the 1st slur in bar 169;
  • the version of FE, which, probably, reflects the state prior to the proofreading to a certain extent. It means that Chopin corrected the discussed slurs in GE1 in the last phase of proofreading.

Apart from corrections of the slurs, Chopin added in GE1 also two staccato dots.
