In the main text, we give dynamic markings in bars 261-267 after A. Different markings appearing in GE are almost certainly a creation of a foreign hand:
- the random nature is revealed by the oversight of the dashes marking the range of cresc. from bar 261 and accents in bars 265-266 and the change of to in bar 267;
- at the end of bar 265 could have been erroneously drawn from the double bass part in Morch;
- the change of to in bar 264 was probably performed in order to coordinate the preceding cresc. with the following .
FE (→EE) generally repeated the markings of GE – except cresc. in bar 261, which is absent in FE (→EE1) and which was added in EE2 (→EE3). The absence of this indication in FE may be simply a mistake of that edition; however, it is also possible that it was initially absent also in GE1, in which it was added – probably by Chopin – in the last phase of proofreading (such a version of events explains the difference in the placement of cresc. in GE1 with respect to A).
