Issues : Errors in EE

b. 9

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

3-note slur in GC (→GE), FE & EE2

Shorter slur in EE1

..

A shorter slur in EE1 is certainly mistaken – cf. subsequent bars. The error was corrected in EE2.

b. 23

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

No accidental in GC (→GE), FE1 (→FE2) & EE

 raising d2 to d2 in FE3 (→FE4)

..

The natural raising d2 to d2, added – most probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) is most likely a correction of a mistake and not a new version of this detail. The bottom notes of the dyads (and in the chords also the middle ones), unless they are an octave doubling of the top voice, always belong to the components of a current chord in the entire section comprising bars 17-36.

b. 32

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

d2-f2-b2 in EE

..

The version of EE is most probably a mistake of the engraver, a so-called Terzverschreibung. FE, on which EE is based, features the correct chord: b1-d2-b2.

b. 52

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 on G in GC (→GE) & FE

 on A in EE

..

The  sign was placed in FE so inaccurately (before the G note) that EE misplaced it at the beginning of the bar.

b. 55

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

In the 2nd half of the bar the bottom notes of the chords in the R.H. – these which require ledger lines in the notation in the treble clef – in all sources, except for EE, is placed on the bottom stave. The b note in the middle chord does not require an accidental, although a cautionary  is undoubtedly indicated here (it was added in GE2). In EE the notes were moved to the top stave (same as in our transcriptions), however, the  which was necessary in this situation was not added. As a result, EE has here an undoubtedly erroneous chord with a instead of b.

The cautionary flats before e1 and d1 were added by us.
