Issues : Different values of chord components

b. 56

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

In the sources, the chord at the beginning of the bar is written monophonically, in spite of varying rhythmic values. Chopin, striving for a maximal simplicity of notation, would often use such notation (cf. e.g. the Etudes Op. 10, in E minor, No. 6, bar 20 i 46F major, No. 8, bar 47, 49 and 50C minor, No. 12, bar 57). In the places where the original notation can be improved without an excessive complication of the notation, we introduce relevant corrections.

b. 131

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Minim & semibreve in GC (→GE)

No inner notes in FE1

Minims in FE2 (→EE,FE3FE4)

..

In the main text we give the undoubtedly correct rhythmic notation of the middle notes of the chord, transmitted by GC (→GE). Among the remaining versions, the first is erroneous, whereas the second – inaccurate (probably due to a misunderstanding of the notation of [A]).

b. 132

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Dotted minim in GC (→GE)

Minim in FE (→EE)

Two-part notation suggested by the editors

..

The version of FE (→EE) is most probably inaccurate – cf. bar 131. In the main text we write the chord in the version of GC using two-part notation, in order to facilitate the interpretation and after the previous bars.
