Issues : Errors of GC

b. 41

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

The chord filling this bar has an erroneous value of a minim in GC. It may prove the copyist's having confused bars 41 and 42. The mistake was corrected already in GE1.

b. 49

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

No sign in GC (→GE)

Arpeggio sign in FE (→EE)

..

The arpeggio sign is already present in FE1, based directly on [A], and almost certainly uncorrected by Chopin. This suggests the absence of the sign in GC (→GE) is probably an oversight. Similarly in bar 65.

b. 64

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

No staccato dot in GC (→GE)

Staccato dot in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of this mark is most probably an oversight of the copyist, repeated in GE. It is also the notation of the slur in this bar (the adjacent note) that is linked to it.

b. 68

c2-c3 in GC (→GE)

e2-e3 in FE (→EE)

..

The comparison with the respective bar of the recapitulation (bar 196), as well as with analogous motifs in bars 52 and 180 and 50, 66, 178 and 194, makes us consider the version of GC to be erroneous.

b. 71-72

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Repeated octave in GC (→GE)

Tied octave in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of the ties sustaining the b2-b3 octave is most probably an oversight of the copyist. It is also likely that Chopin added the ties in [A] already after having prepared GC. In any case, the version of FE (→EE) is undoubtedly authentic and must be considered to be the basic one. Cf. analogous bars 199-200.
