composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

In the sources, the chord at the beginning of the bar is written monophonically, in spite of varying rhythmic values. Chopin, striving for a maximal simplicity of notation, would often use such notation (cf. e.g. the Etudes Op. 10, in E minor, No. 6, bar 20 i 46, F major, No. 8, bar 47, 49 and 50, C minor, No. 12, bar 57). In the places where the original notation can be improved without an excessive complication of the notation, we introduce relevant corrections. category imprint: Editorial revisions |

Incorrectly placed ties in GE – no tie to a2 and a 'tie' between f2-b1 – may be attributed to the engraver's distraction. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in GE |

The absence of the ties sustaining the b2-b3 octave is most probably an oversight of the copyist. It is also likely that Chopin added the ties in [A] already after having prepared GC. In any case, the version of FE (→EE) is undoubtedly authentic and must be considered to be the basic one. We give priority to the version with the tie, as in the entire section embracing bars 65-80, the middle notes of the octave chords are struck only at the beginning or in the middle of the bar. Authenticity of any of the versions is not entirely certain – both an oversight of the tie by the copyist and a mistake of the engraver of FE1, who, e.g., overlooked the tie between the previous crotchets, are also possible. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , FE revisions , Inaccuracies in GC |

The authenticity of the tie sustaining a1 does not raise any doubts (it could have been added in GC even by Chopin himself). In turn, the version without the tie may be a result of an oversight of the engraver of FE. The slur in EE2 was most probably added on the basis of GE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE |
