b. 50-54

Three phrase marks were probably added by Chopin in the base text to EE. According to us, it cannot be excluded that according to Chopin's intention, the slurs were supposed to reach only the top most octave in bars 51 and 53, yet the engraver routinely interpreted the signs, written with a Chopin panache. The possibility is suggested by a staccato dot introduced in GC on the 2nd crotchet in bar 51. It is, however, only a supposition, therefore, in the main text we leave the source notation, particularly that independently from the articulation of the aforementioned octaves, the phrases here undoubtedly comprise two bars. Embracing with a slur also the last crotchet in bars 51 and 53 seems to be also natural from the harmonic point of view – in both pairs it constitutes a solution of the delay appearing at the beginning of the bar.
