Ornaments

b. 67

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

in GE

No ornament in FE (→EE)

Our suggestion

..

Discrepancies in the marking of the first ain bar 67 with an ornament should be analysed with taking into account the analogy with bars 71 and 75. In all three places GE has , while in FE (→EE) an ornament () appears only in bar 75. In that context both markings mean the same, yet it is not clear whether Chopin ultimately wanted to change for in bar 75 alone, or also in bars 67 & 71, where it was realised partly due to misunderstanding or oversight. Therefore we supplement the main text with the sign  in parentheses.

b. 75

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

in GE

in FE (→EE)

with suggested by the editors

..

The sign which occurs in GE was replaced by a in FE (→EE). This is probably a result of Chopin's proofreading, although both markings mean practically the same in that context. Chopin could have added in order to restore an ornament overlooked by the engraver.

In the main text we suggest supplementing relating to the upper note of the ornament. An unmarked use of a1 between a minim a1 in bar 74 and a quaver a1 in bar 75 seems unlikely.

A grace note added in FES

..

The grace note C1 giving a sonically consequent ending of the progression of octaves was added by Chopin in FES. We regard it as an authorial improvement, and accept it into the main text.
