No ornament in GE

..

The sign in A over the 3rd quaver is not entirely legible (similarly in As and AI) – it reminds a  rather than a . FE (→EE) includes a , whereas in GE there is no ornament at all, which may suggest that the  in FE was introduced in the last proofreading. Taking into account this possibility and clear mordents in AII and AIII, in the main text we give a . Actually, in faster tempos both signs were used by Chopin interchangeably. Cf. bar 92.

b. 75-76

composition: Op. 64 No 1, Waltz in D♭ major

..

The several-bar long  sign is written inaccurately in A – the upper arm is a one and a half bar shorter. We adopt the range of the bottom arm to be meaningful. In FE the sign was led only to the end of bar 75, which is probably a result of a mistake – the sign reaches the end of the line, whereas  from bar 77 was placed already in bar 76. See the next note, as well as bars 71-75.

4 hairpins in A

2 hairpins in GE1op (→GE2op→#GE3op)

4 hairpins suggested by the editors

..

Generally, the dynamic hairpin in GE is incomplete and erroneous in these bars. The traces visible in FE prove that the mistake was committed first in this edition, which, through a proof copy, went into GE. In FE (→EE) the signs were corrected and completed in the last phase of proofreading, perhaps with Chopin's participation. A possible reason of mistakes of the engraver of FE could have been the abbreviated notation of A with dynamic signs, which could have impeded their assignment to correct bars. In the main text we suggest signs of FE in bars 87-90, analogous to signs in bars 15-18 and perhaps corrected by Chopin. In turn, in bars 91-92 we give signs of A, since in FE the sign in bar 91 was probably accidentally overlooked.
