Issues : Inaccuracies in GC

b. 4-5

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

Slur in GC (possible interpretation→GE1) & EE

Slurs in GC (probable interpretation), FE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

In GC both the end of the slur in bar 4 (at the end of the line) and the beginning of the slur in bar 5, starting the new line, are written with such an extensive movement that they can be interpreted as one slur. According to us, it is, however, more likely that Chopin wanted to emphasise the beginning of the theme with a new slur.

b. 12-13

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

Two slurs in GC & GE2 (→GE3)

One slur in FE, EE & GE1

..

The inaccurately written slurs of GC are, however, according to us, separated. It cannot be excluded that it looked similarly in the base texts to FE and EE.

b. 18

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

..

In GC and EE1 (→EE2) there is no  returning c in the last chord in the L.H. The sign was added in GE and EE3, and probably also in the proofreading of FE.

b. 23

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

..

In GC and EE1 there is no  lowering F to F in the 1st chord in the bar. This patent inaccuracy was corrected in GE and EE2 (→EE3). FE also includes the correct text.

Slur in GC (literal reading→GE1)

Slur in GC, contextual interpretation

Slurs in FE

Slurs in EE

Slur in GE2 (→GE3), possible interpretation of GC

..

In the main text we give the most natural, according to us, interpretation of the notation of GC, including Gutmann's inclination to draw (too) broad slurs – cf. the Etude in A minor, No. 11, bar 9. The slurs of FE do not raise major concerns, in turn, the broken slur in EE seems to be a result of a misunderstanding – a context interpretation of the slurring of the base text to this edition could have led to the version of GE2 (→GE3). See also the note to bar 25.
