The correction of the to the sign in GC seems to be puzzling:
- it can be a change introduced by Chopin; its aim – apart from adding – was most probably extension of pedal, although Chopin did not introduce a new sign;
- it can be an autocorrection of the copyist rewriting the version transferred by EE. Having noticed his mistake – the notation of the sign, performed "run-on" (Gutmann started writing even another sign) and omission of – the copyist corrected both mistakes with one correction.
In the first case, it is the longer pedalling that is compatible with Chopin's later intention, in the second one – the chronology of the changes is uncertain. The piano arguments are for the version with the longer pedal and as the one that Chopin could have considered to be better, as the increased sound volume corresponds to crescendo introducing the culminant .
GE1 does not include the correction in GC described above – considering perhaps that the sign must be there, so that the notation remains faultless. EE1 includes a text which is generally compatible with GC, yet in EE2 (→EE3) was added on the basis of FE.
