Issues : Errors in EE

b. 3

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

..

In A (→GE1), FE and EE there is no  returning f2 in the penultimate sixth. This patent error was noticed only in GE2 (→GE3) on the occasion of a thorough revision of accidentals – cf. the notes concerning the natural and flat before the previous sixth.

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

..

In A, FE and EE1 there is no cancellation of a few previously raised notes in chromatic passages:

  • in A and FE there is no  returning f2 at the end of bar 7 and two flats in bar 8 – returning a2 in the 8th sixth and e3 in the 10th sixth;
  • EE is missing the above three and flats returning g2 in the 10th sixth and d3 in the 12th sixth in bar 8.

The remaining editions introduced additions to these patent oversights (some of all):

  • GE1 added the  returning a2 in the 8th sixth in bar 8, while GE2 (→GE3) also the rest of the overlooked signs;
  • EE2 (→EE3) added the flats returning a2 in the 8th sixth, g2 in the 10th sixth and d3 in the 12th sixth in bar 8, which resulted in the same text as in GE1.

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

No fingering in A (→GE) & EE1

Fingering in FE

Fingering in EE2 (→EE3)

..

The fingering of the beginning of the phrase was added by Chopin most probably at the time of proofreading FE. It was then repeated – with errors – in EE2 (→EE3).

b. 32-33

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

Fingering for 13 sixths in A & GE2 (→GE3)

Fingering for 24 sixths in FE

Fingering in GE1 (12 sixths)

Fingering for 13 sixths in EE

..

The partially different fingering of EE (the differences include 5 sixths, from the 6th to the 10th quaver in bar 32) is uncomfortable to such an extent that one can suspect a mistake of the engraver who could have, for example, mistaken the groups of quavers – he wrote the fingering of the 9th and 10th sixths over the 6th and 7th quavers, while he placed the numerals foreseen for the 5th-7th sixths over the 8th-10th quavers.
The fingering of the entire bar 33, present only in FE, was most probably added by Chopin in the proofreading.
GE1 omitted the numerals written at the beginning of bar 33 in A; the inaccuracy was corrected in GE2 (→GE3).
