b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

in A (→FC), EE & GE2 (→GE3)

in FE & GE1

..

The use of  time signature is not surprising only in GE1, as FE does not use the  indication in the Etudes – contrary to the manuscripts – at all, neither in Op. 10 nor in the Etude in F minor, Dbop. 36 No. 1 (cf. also the Impromptu in A major, Op. 29). In any case, the correctness and authenticity of the  time signature does not raise any doubts thanks to A (→FC). The correct time signature was returned in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 15

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

..

The second chord in the R.H. is a crotchet both in the upper and lower voices. Hence the lower voice has 9 quavers in this bar. The error resulted from hastily performed articulation corrections – Chopin would delete the staccato signs written inside the chords, which, in some cases, required rewriting the entire chord; omission of the quaver flag occurred exactly in the last rewritten chord.

b. 27

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Quaver in A (→FCGE)

Crotchet in FE & EE

..

The value of quaver for g2 is most probably the original version, inadvertently left in A (→FCGE). It is indicated by the deleted slurs visible in A, grouping the chords in two in this bar. The value of crotchet was introduced probably in the base text to EE and in proofreading of FE. Cf. the adjacent note.

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Crotchet in A (→FE,FCGE1) & EE

Quaver in GE2 (→GE3)

The seemingly erroneous notation of A and of the remaining sources (except for GE2 and GE3) could have been intended by Chopin, although in this Etude, he used the notation compliant with the rules in similar cases. In other pieces, rhythmic values exceeding the bar were used by Chopin both in autographs (e.g., the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, 1st mov., bars 278-279, 3rd mov., bars 423-424) and corrections of print (the Polonaise in C minor, Op. 26 No. 1, bars 19-20). On the other hand, one cannot exclude a simple oversight of the quaver flag (cf. bar 15).

b. 53

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Minim in A, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

Minim without stem in FC (→GE1)

Quaver in FE

..

The missing extension of the note is probably a mistake of the engraver of FE. In FC (→GE1) the additional stem to the minim d was omitted.
