Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 17-19

composition: Op. 25 No 3, Etude in F major

No signs in GC (→GE)

 in FE & EE

..

Both  signs (in bars 17 and 19) could have been accidentally omitted in GC (→GE) due to the placement of bars 17-20 at the end of the first page of the manuscript, devoid of any dynamic indications in the previous bars.

Our variant suggestion

..

The  indication was most probably added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE. In the main text we give it in brackets due to its absence in the basic source (GC) and broader context of dynamic differences in the entire middle section of the Etude – see bars 17-19.

b. 51

d in FE & GE2

..

The version of FE with is a result of Chopin's proofreading – there are visible traces of correction in print. It cannot be excluded that the version with was originally present also in bars 3 and 11, where Chopin corrected it in [A]. It would be then a case of overlooking one place while proofreading a few analogous bars (quite a frequent phenomenon in Chopin's pieces). Both changes in later GE are revisions – in GE2 this figure was assimilated to analogous bars 3 and 11; GE3 returns to the version of the base text, i.e. GC.

b. 61-63

composition: Op. 25 No 3, Etude in F major

..

The cautionary naturals before the last note in the L.H. in bars 61 and 63 (c1 and c) appear in FE, GE and EE3, yet only in FE one can suspect Chopin's proofreading.

Arpeggio signs in FE

..

The arpeggio signs, present only in FE, are most probably a result of Chopin proofreading of FE.
