The e1-a1 fourth, repeated in the subsequent bars, is to be sustained with fingers as a crotchet:
The so-called "harmonic legato" (sustaining the harmonic sounds with fingers) is to be applied also in the next bars, in spite of the fact that in Chopin's simplified notation it is only the top note of the fourth that is sustained.
