Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

In the main text we suggest an indication composed of the elements whose authenticity seems to be most plausible:  written by Chopin's hand in AI and , which is a natural starting point for cresc. in FE (→GE,EE).

Slur in AI

Slur in FE (→GE1,EE)

Our suggestion

..

Both lack of the slur in bar 6 in AI and in bars 4-5 in FE (→GE1,EE) may be considered as inaccuracy of notation related to the transition to the new line (such situations are very frequent in Chopin's pieces, e.g., in the Etude in F major, No. 8, bars 34-36 and 61 or E major, No. 11 bars 40-42). Taking into consideration the clear slur in the analogous phrase in bars 1-2, in the main text we suggest a similar solution, combining two slurs appearing in the enumerated sources. In GE2 and subsequent GE,s, a slur was added in bar 5.

No marking in AI

According to us, the  combination, very rarely used by Chopin, is most probably an inaccurately reproduced   mark, which was used by Chopin on a number of occasions (e.g., in the autograph of the Etude in E major, No. 11, bars 17-25). Cf. bar 1.

4 accents &  in FE (→EE)

3 accents &  in GE

Our alternative suggestion

..

The indications of AI were changed in the version prepared for print, certainly with the participation of Chopin. Therefore, in the main text we give the version of FE (→EE). However, some of its elements can raise certain doubts, particularly the  hairpins and the last accent, overlooked in GE. Therefore, we alternatively suggest a certain interpretation of the notation of FE, based on an assumption of an inaccurate reproduction of Chopin's intention by the engraver.

The error of FE (→GE,EE) in bar 16 is undeniable:

  •  appears in the editions in three strictly analogous bars 18, 20 and 22;
  •  is rewritten already at the beginning of bar 16.

In all the aforementioned bars AI has only accents, without additional indications. Cf. bars 20-22.
