composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor
..
In the version prepared for print, the first fingering numerals appear not until bar 12. However, during the lessons with Chopin, the indications concerning the fingering proved to be necessary already earlier. In the main text we consider the fingering written by Chopin in FES. In EE Fontana also offered his suggestion for bar 1, yet this fingering, avoiding the use of the 1st finger on black keys, diverts from the one by Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Annotations in FES |

In the main text we give here the fingering written by Chopin in FED in analogous bar 60 (cf. General Editorial Principles, p. 17). Some of these numerals are also written in bar 2 (FES) and bar 10 (FED and FES). category imprint: Differences between sources |

The slur in the L.H. in AI and FE (→GE,EE) embraces only two bars (in AI the beginning and the end are not precisely indicated). In FES Chopin extended the slur until D in bar 17. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources |

The slur combining the octave with the semiquavers in bar 17 was added in pencil – probably by Chopin – in FED. Cf. the note on the slur in the L.H. category imprint: Differences between sources |
