Our variant suggestion

..

At the beginning, Chopin marked the dynamic highlight of the endings of these bars with long accents (AI), which he then replaced with hairpins and the crescendo indication (editions). According to us, the indications do not have to be incompatible (cf. analogous bars 63-66), hence in the main text we suggest a possibility of considering the accents.

 suggested by the editors

..

At the end of bars 20 and 22, in the main text we suggest to combine the  mark of the editions with the accents of AI, as Chopin marked it in analogous situations in bars 16 and 18. The version was introduced in EE3 (→EE4), probably on the basis of comparison with these bars.

Long accents in FE (→EE)

Accent &  in GE

..

According to us, in spite of the difference in the length of the sign, in both bars the accents in AI (→FE) are to be understood as long. This is how it was understood in EE, while GE has a short accent in bar 25 and  in bar 26.

b. 27-28

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No marks in AI

7 accents in FE (→EE)

4 long accents in GE (→GE1a)

4 short accents in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

Lack of accents in bar 27 in GE may be a result of an oversight or indicate to their addition in the last proofreading of FE (→EE). Four accents in bar 28 are clearly longer in GE1 (→GE1a) than in the remaining editions, see also the note to bars 29-30.

Long accents in GE1 (→GE1a)

Short accents in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

The accents in bar 29 are clearly longer in #A than in bars 27-28 and 30. In GE1 (→GE1a), such longer accents were used in both discussed bars. The erroneous reproduction of the short accents of the autograph as long would not take place at all and it seems unlikely that Chopin would have liked to differentiate between the accents in these two bars. Taking into account the above, in the main text we give eight long accents.
