Slurs

b. 45

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

In AI there is no slur, which in this case undoubtedly results from the working nature of the manuscript.

b. 47-50

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

Slur in AI

Slurs in FE (→GE1GE1aGE2), contextual interpretation; slurs in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

Slurs in EE

Our suggestion

..

In AI the slur in these bars starts only on the last group of semiquavers in bar 50. The slurring of FE is complete, yet unclear – in bars 47 and 49, at the end of the line, the slurs are clearly extended, suggesting continuation. However, the slurs in bars 48 and 50, starting from the 1st semiquaver, do not confirm this suggestion. This ambiguity was revised both in GE, by clearly combining the slurs (in the previous GE the slurs were combined only in bars 49-50), and in EE, in which each bar is provided with a separate slur. We suggest here one slur, as breaking the slur at the beginning of bar 49 could also have been caused by misunderstanding of the notation of [A] (perhaps inaccurate due to the abbreviated notation?).

b. 66-68

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No slur in AI

Two-bar slur in FE (→GE,EE2)

Three-bar slur in EE3 (→EE4)

..

In this context, the missing slur in bar 68 must be considered as inaccuracy of notation. Therefore, in the main text we suggest to extend the slur from bars 66-67. A similar interpretation of slurring was already performed by the reviser of EE3 (→EE4).

b. 69-70

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No slur in AI & GE4 (→GE5)

Slur in FE (→GE1)

GE2 (→GE3)

Our suggestion

..

The fact of beginning the slur from the 2nd group of semiquavers is almost certainly an inaccuracy of notation, which probably follows from [A]. Different versions of the slur's ending in EE and GE2 (→GE3) are certainly a result of the engravers' errors. The omission of the slur in GE4 (→GE5) may be considered as an oversight or revision.
