In A, the word ritenuto appears more or less mid-bar, which allows for a certain freedom in its interpretation, as it may either be binding from the beginning of that bar or apply predominantly to the motif in the 2nd half of the bar. In GE (→FEEE) it was printed at the beginning of the bar and thus the extent of its application was determined.
