composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

One slur in GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

The slurring of A is inaccurate here – the slur from previous bars ends on the crotchet in the middle of the bar, even though the next one that starts on the new page (in bar 31) suggests a continuation from the previous page. Both the copyist and the engravers interpreted this by merging both slurs in one. According to us, Chopin must have had in mind the same phrasing as in analogous bars 6 and 14, which means that he did not end the long slur from the previous bars too early but forgot to write the beginning of the slur at the end of bar 30.

b. 51-52

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur in A (→GCGE)

Two slurs in FE

No slurs in EE

..

The separate R.H. slurs in these bars result most likely from a misunderstanding of the notation in A by the engraver of FE.  Bar 52 starts a new line in A, and the beginning of slur clearly indicates a continuation. However, the slur in bar 51 extends only slightly beyond the bar line what might have mislead the engraver.
EE has no slur whatsoever (it only starts in bar 54), what is certainly a mistake, like in previous bars.

b. 64-67

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur in A (contextual interpretation→FE)

No slur in bars 65-67 in GC

New slur from bar 66 in EE

4 slurs in GE

..

In both manuscripts a new line of text starts from bar 65, resulting in inaccurate or erroneous notation of L.H. slurs. In A the end of slur in bar 64 clearly indicates continuation which is not confirmed by the beginning of slur in bar 65. In GC the slur ends in bar 64 and is not continued in the subsequent bars. The engraver of FE was not mislead by the inaccuracy of A. However, it probably caused an error in EE which starts a new slur from a new line (from bar 66, closely resembling bar 65 beginning a new line in A). GE amended the GC version by adding separate, bar-long slurs in bars 65-67 (probably generalising the slur written in GC in bar 68).

b. 71-76

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slurs in A (→FE,EE)

..

In GC the slurs in bars 71-76 are written inaccurately, yet in the majority of the cases they embrace the bar from the first to the last note (only in bar 72 the slur clearly starts from the 2nd note). GE has bar-long slurs in all these bars. In the main text we give the slurs of A (→FE,EE), distinctly different despite slight inaccuracies at line breaks. See also bars 77-79.

b. 113-115

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Continuous slur in A (→FE,EE)

Slurs in GC(→GE)

..

In both A and GC bar 114 starts a new line. The slurs in A unequivocally mean a continuous slur, however, the notation in GC is ambiguous – the beginning of slur in bar 114 suggests continuation from the previous bar but the slur in bar 113 ends on the last quaver (this inaccurate notation is meticulously reproduced in GE). We assume this to denote separate slurs. In the main text we give the notation of A (→FE,EE) which does not rise doubts.
