Crotchet g1 in A (→GC)

Dotted crotchet in FE & EE

Single-part notation in GE

..

In A (→GC), probably as a result of an oversight, the g1 crotchet was written without the extending dot. The dot was undoubtedly rightly – cf. bar 17 – added in FE and EE, while the one-part notation used in GE erroneously included the final e1 to the melody of the top voice.

Two slurs in A (→GCGE)

One slur in FE, EE

..

Despite the distinctly separate slurs in A, both FE and EE have a continuous slur here, possibly under the influence of the R.H. slur.

Minims in A (→EE,GCGE)

Crotchets in FE

..

FE has dotted crotchets instead of minims. It is hard to imagine that one could have committed such a striking mistake, therefore, it seems to be more plausible that the engraver changed Chopin's notation on purpose, most probably considering the chords in the L.H. and the R.H. as two beats filling this bar.

b. 48

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

In A (→GC,FE1FE2) there are no accidentals before the upper notes of the last two sixths, g2 and b2. It is a typical inaccuracy of notation of Chopin, which does not result in any doubts in this context. Moreover, FE1 (→FE2) has no  raising b1 to b1. In FE3 both necessary naturals were added, the same notation also occurs in EE. Only GE has the correct text in this bar.

b. 50

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

A (→GC,FE1FE2) lacks naturals before b in the L.H. and b2 in the R.H., while  before b1 is written only on the 8th semiquaver (instead of the second). Those obvious imprecisions were corrected in other editions: in GE & EE all three necessary naturals were added (the  on the 8th semiquaver, superfluous after those corrections was only removed in EE), and in FE3 only the signs before b and b2.
