Issues : Annotations in FEJ

b. 160

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

..

In FE0 (→FE,FEG) there are no naturals raising d1 to d1 on the 2nd crotchet in the L.H. and d2 to d2 in the R.H. It is undoubtedly Chopin's mistake  – cf.  in the next bar. The necessary signs were added in EE and GE, they were also added in pencil in FED (only before d1) and in FEJ (both).

Fingering written into FEJ

No teaching fingering

..

The sign added in crayon in FEJ probably means the fingering number, '1'.

b. 218-219

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

..

In both bars in FE0 (→FE,FEG) there is not any  lowering g3(2) to g3(2). The flats in bars 217 and 220 prove Chopin's oversights, probably still in [A]. Some of the necessary signs were added in pencil by the composer in FED (both before g3) and in FEJ (at the beginning of bar 219). They were also added in GE and EE (the sign in bar 218 only in GE2 and GE3).

g2 in FE0 (→EE)

f2 in FE & GE

..

The version of FE0 (→EE) with g2 as the bottom note of the first of the pairs of the quavers is most probably erroneous. In the base text to FE and in FEG (→GE) Chopin changed this g2 to f2, yet in FE the correction was misunderstood, hence the flat was also copied, which resulted in a f2. Chopin corrected this new error in FEJ. In this situation, the presence of the original version in EE must be considered as a result of an oversight of proofreading or the engraver's inattention. In the main text we give the text written by Chopin's hand in FEG and FEJ.
