b. 21

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

..

In FEG (→GE1) there are no accidentals in this bar. A comparison with analogous bars 13, 185 and 193 proves a mistake (probably of the engraver). The remaining sources added the necessary naturals raising D to D and d to d

a-e1 in FE0 (→FE1,FEGGE1)

a-c1-e1 in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

On the 2nd and 3rd crotchet FE and GE1 have empty a-efifths. It is undoubtedly an omission of the engraver of FE – cf. analogous bars 30 and 202 – it could have been caused by the unclear notation of [A]. Chopin probably added the chords in the base text to EE. The corrected version, probably on the basis of a comparison with the mentioned bars, was introduced also in GE2 (→GE3).

Pedalling in FE

Pedalling in EE

No pedalling in FEG (→GE)

..

The lack of pedalling in EE in bars 41-44 is most probably due to an oversight—these bars, which begin a new musical thought, are last on the page, while the preceding fragment is written without pedal markings. The inadvertence could have happened to the engraver of EE or Chopin himself while preparing the Stichvorlage for EE.

Sixths in EE

..

In bars 44 and 52 EE has an e-csixth on the 2nd and 3rd crotchet, similarly in analogous bars 76 and 84. Chopin most probably introduced this variant in the base text to EE. In the main text we give the version of the remaining sources whose authenticity does not raise any, even minor, doubts.

Pedalling in FE

Pedalling in EE

No pedalling in FEG (→GE)

..

In FE there is no pedalling in bars 48-51 (it is to be found only in bars 55-56). There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of the pedalling in EE even though it could result from Chopin's mistake—while preparing the basis for EE the composer has presumedly written the pedalling into bars 45-51 (the first line of text on the second page of FE and EE) mistaking them for bars 41-47.
