Articulation, Accents, Hairpins

b. 223-226

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

No accents in FE & EE

Long accents in FEG (→GE1)

Short accents in GE2 (→GE3)

Our variant suggestion

..

Chopin wrote four long accents in FEG (the sign in bar 224 is poorly visible on the accessible photocopy, yet its existence is indicated by the presence of a respective sign in GE1). In GE2 (→GE3) long accents were arbitrarily changed to short. As Chopin did not add accents in FE and EE, in the main text we suggest them in the variant form.

The  hairpins were added by Chopin in the base texts to GE and FE. It seems that the hairpins are also absent in FE0, which could confirm their absence in EE (although we cannot exclude the engraver's error). In FEG the beginning of the hairpins was either extended by Chopin or it could overlap a possible sign of the accent - the interpretation is impeded by the poor photocopy of the source. In GE2 (→GE3) there is a short accent, yet it certainly results from the fact of homogenising it with the previous bars. Not being certain of the markings of FEG, in the main text we adopt the sign of GE2 (→GE3), which was led to the end of bar 228.

b. 230

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

 in FEG

No sign in FE, EE & GE

Our suggestion

..

Chopin added the  hairpins in FEG, yet in GE1 (→GE2GE3) they are absent. The sign is also absent in FE and EE.

b. 244

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

No mark in FE, GE & EE

Wedge in FEG

Our variant suggestion

..

The wedge written by Chopin in FEG was not included in GE, which is most probably a result of the engraver's inattention. As it is also absent in FE and EE, we leave the inclusion of this indication at the discretion of the performer.

b. 261

The staccato dot written by Chopin in FEG may be ambiguous: it is not known whether it concerns the octave in the R.H. in bar 261 or the octave in the L.H. in the great stave right above it, in bar 256. It may be the reason explaining why the sign was not included in GE1 (→GE2GE3). The sign included in EE is also not entirely clear – in spite of the fact that it resembles a wedge, it has a dot in its structure. Therefore, it is hard to conclude what was written in Chopin base text to EE; hence to the main text we adopt a staccato dot, written by Chopin's hand in FEG.
