The change of Vivace to Lento was introduced by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). The tempo indication of this Etude is the most flagrant example of the change of concept in Chopin's pieces, although a few arguments prove that the actual deceleration of the tempo could have not been that significant as it is suggested by the transition from Vivace to Lento ma non troppo. Cf. bar 21.

Chopin added the metronome indication at the time of proofreading FE. The value of crotchet in GE and EE is certainly erroneous – even with a quaver the tempo seems to be very fast and it has not been obeyed by the pianists for over one hundred years.

Short accent in GE & EE, probable reading of A

Dot & accent in FE

Possible interpretation of A

..

In the sources, the indications concerning the e1 crotchet are unclear. The fact of shifting the accent in A to the right may be considered as an irrelevant inaccuracy of notation or a suggestion of the sign's length. The version of FE seems to be even more puzzling, especially given the fact that it was most probably corrected – over the stave, to the right of the note there are visible possible traces of deletion of the accent. It is also unclear why the staccato dot was not included neither in GE nor in EE.
In the main text we give a short accent over the note, which combines the most definite elements of the notation of the sources. Alternatively, due to the melodic context, we suggest a long accent here.

No slurs in AI & EE2

Slurs in A (→FEGE) & EE3 (→EE4)

..

In EE2 there are no slurs over bars 30-31 and 34-35. It is one of numerous oversights of this impression, corrected in the next one. AI does not have slurs in the entire fragment (bars 30-41).

b. 32-33

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major
