 in AI

- - cresc. e ritenuto in A

cresc. e ritenuto in FE (→EE,GE1GE1aGE2)

cresc.  ritenuto in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In AI there is none of the indications written in A (→FEEE,GE1GE1aGE2) in these bars, yet there is a  sign in bar 16. The editions overlooked the dashes determining the range of the indications, which is a frequent mistake in the first editions of Chopin's works. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) there is no "e" conjunction before ritenuto in bar 16.

Four dots in A

Six dots in FE (→EE)

Five dots in GE1 (→GE1a)

Slur & dots in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

Dots with slur in EE4

..

In the main text we give most probably the only (except for AI, which is devoid of indications) authentic version of articulation signs – four staccato dots written in A, traditionally meaning small accents. The remaining versions are probably a result of imposition of errors and revisions of the editors.

b. 58-59

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Wedge in AI

Dots in A

Wedges in FE (→GE1GE1aGE2) and EE3 (→EE4) & (GE4GE5)

No marks in EE2

Dot & wedge in GE3

..

It is unclear whether Chopin wanted to mark the staccato of the quaver after the semiquaver triplet with a dot, as it is in A, or with a wedge, as it is in AI (only in bar 58) and FE (→GE,EE; in EE2 both signs were omitted, while in GE3 in bar 58 there is a dot). In this case, we consider A as the most reliable source.
