Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

b. 1-4

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

Four slurs in A

Two slurs in FE (→EE2)

Two slurs in GE1

Three slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

Three slurs in GE4 (→GE5)

Three slurs in EE3 (→EE4)

..

Each of four slurs in the L.H. written in A embraces the entire bar, despite the fact that due to the inconvenient graphic layout, the notation is not always precise. In FE (→EE2) only two out of them were recreated, in bars 2-3. Similarly in GE1, in which the slur in bar 3 is led only to the penultimate note, a (this inaccuracy was corrected only in GE4 and GE5). In later GE and EE a slur was added in bar 1. In the main text we give all slurs of A, as an intentional omission of some of them in FE is highly unlikely. Cf. bars 9-10.

 in A

FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we reproduce the  sign after A, over the part of the R.H. In the editions it was put between the staves. It is impossible to claim whether the change comes from Chopin, yet the sign placed over the stave seems to be more legible, as it does not pose a risk of assigning it to the semiquavers in the L.H.

Slurs in A

No slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The inaccurate and unclear slurs of A were ignored in FE (→GE,EE). Their range, particularly in the case of bar 3, is uncertain. We do not include them in the main text, as Chopin did not repeat them in A and in analogous bars 10-11 and 42-43, nor did he add them in a proofreading of FE (cf. bars 47-49).

Fingering in A

No fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

Our suggestion based on A & FES

..

The '1' digits at the end of bars 5 and 13 (and 45) are written in A. It is hard to determine why none of them is present in FE (→GE,EE). In any case, Chopin's entry in FES in bars 45-46 confirms both the fingering and the need for its indication. Therefore, in the main text we give the 1s written in A. (The fingering written in FES in bar 46 is also given by us in bar 6 – cf. General Editorial Principlesp. 17.)

b. 5-13

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

 twice in A

 once in FE (→GE) & EE3 (→EE4)

Our variant suggestion

..

In bars 5 and 13 it is not certain whether the difference between the indications (accents,  hairpins) of A and FE (→GE,EE) is a result of the engraver's inaccuracy or Chopin's intervention. In the main text we propose coherent indications of A
