Four slurs in A

Two slurs in FE (→EE2)

Two slurs in GE1

Three slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

Three slurs in GE4 (→GE5)

Three slurs in EE3 (→EE4)

..

Each of four slurs in the L.H. written in A embraces the entire bar, despite the fact that due to the inconvenient graphic layout, the notation is not always precise. In FE (→EE2) only two out of them were recreated, in bars 2-3. Similarly in GE1, in which the slur in bar 3 is led only to the penultimate note, a (this inaccuracy was corrected only in GE4 and GE5). In later GE and EE a slur was added in bar 1. In the main text we give all slurs of A, as an intentional omission of some of them in FE is highly unlikely. Cf. bars 9-10.

Long accents in A

Different accents in FE & EE3 (→EE4)

One accent in EE2

Short accents in GE

..

Two long accents visible in A were reproduced in FE (→EE; in EE2 the accent in bar 7 was overlooked) in varied ways. GE includes short accents in both bars. There is no reason to assume that Chopin interfered with any of the versions.

Fingering in A (→FE)

..

In the context of the 1st half of bars 7 and 15, the position of the fingering digits indicates the hand with which a given note is to be performed: digits over the notes point to the R.H., digits under the notes – to the L.H. This characteristic fingering was indicated by Chopin in A (→FE) in each appearance of this place (bars 7, 15 and 47). The sense of this fingering, completed already in a proofreading of FE in the 2nd half of bar 7, was not understood by the engraver of GE who arranged all digits over the tie. Fontana also misinterpreted it, as in EE he indicated another division between the hands.

Fingering in A (→FE)

..

In the main text we reproduce the fingering written in bar 47 in A (→FE). The arrangement of the digits under or above the notes indicates a division between the hands, which was misinterpreted in GE. Fontana also did not include (did not understand?) this hint in EE, suggesting a different division and repeating his own indications in bars 48-49 (except the first note in bar 49).

Our suggestion

..

The given in the main text fingering in the 2nd half of bar 50 was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE. In this edition the 1st finger is repeated also over g at the beginning of bar 51, which seems to be an error (the digit was deleted in GE4 and GE5). In GE Chopin's indication of division between the hands with the use of digits under and above the notes was misunderstood. In EE Fontana modified and completed authentic indications.
